Lusaka Park in Theunissen was founded on 12 May 1990. In Masilo, from 1986, most stands had backyard shack tenants, they were overcrowded with just one bucket toilet as an ablution facility. The health situation was becoming dire, let alone the indignity of homelessness suffered by those backyard tenants.
It was in this context that the decision to illegally occupy the unused land alongside R30 route was conceived and implemented. Lusaka was thus born as an informal settlement. We were able to force the municipality to provide some services such as water and bucket toilets (people simply encircled buckets with plastics or zink or whatever to ensure illusive privacy). But the greatest achievement was that by 1992 we managed to ensure that Lusaka was formalised as a township, with services such as portable water provided. Lusaka is the shining success of the struggle of the people of Masilo, by far!
